Meet Jane Martin: Crofton Park’s local legend; Mother; Patron of independent business; Deputy Director of Brockley Max; blogger; passionate Remainer and the woman behind @JaneCanDoSE4. This August will mark her thirtieth year living in Crofton Park and she’s easy to spot when I arrive for our meeting at Parlez in Brockley. She’s the one chatting to just about everyone in the café. It’s a beautiful sunny day and we take a seat outside, it really is Jane in her natural habitat: a bright and breezy Southeast London parade, waxing lyrical about her love of all things local…
The music industry has been profoundly changed by multinationals, the internet and online streaming. In a time where we can listen to practically any track we like at the click of a button, it is amazing that independent record shops are able to survive. Yet surviving they are, thriving in fact - with hundreds more being opened in the past five years. This is a testament to community and Record Store Day is an annual celebration of this unique and global culture. We've compiled a list below of South London's best-loved independent music spots, and whether they're participating in Record Store Day.
As September approaches, it is time to accept that Autumn is upon us. As it gets a little colder and darker, it's easy to retreat into your living room for 6 months. But Autumn 2017 South of the river is looking to be packed with stuff to do, and we wouldn't want you to miss it. Whether you're into art, music, cooking or socialising, we've got you covered. So throw on your scarves and rally up some friends, because Autumn is the new Summer in South London.
Going to the pictures in South London has, traditionally, been a rainy-day activity, however, slowly but surely, this perception is being chiselled away. How? Well, after much consultation with scientists it has been discovered that projecting a moving image upon a large screen outside can also be done in the UK. Due to the fickle weather of this country however, this activity is only really doable during the summer months and, thankfully, the kind, handsome, and talented residents of South London are spoilt for choice with regards to venues. We love you guys, and we love films, so to show you our love we’ve compiled what we think is a pretty exhaustive alphabetical guide to 18 outdoor cinema venues in South London. Enjoy.
Having not been held last year, the Crystal Palace Overground Festival is set to return this year with events being held in conjunction with the festival from 12th-18th June. Having started in 2006, the festival has grown and grown, with approximately 10,000 people visiting over five days back in 2015, as it seeks to create cultural events and activities that bring the local community together, and promotes Crustal Palace as an interesting and special place to live and work in. We at South London Club love anything that promotes the diverse culture of South London, and we also love events that promote local independent business, so we’re definitely big fans of the event. To give you an idea as to what is on offer during the festival we’ve gone through the programme of events and have worked out a short guide of what we reckon are the best bets for each day, starting with the last day of the festival.
From the 8th-11th June, Balham will play host to the second Balham Literary Festival, produced by Dulwich Books. The event will feature talks from numerous different writers, and is going to be hosted at the Grade-II listed Bedford Pub. The talks will explore numerous different themes relevant to those that call Balham home, and even further afield, and there will also be a pop-up bookshop at the pub all weekend.
We’re closing in on that time of year again when we can safely discard our winter coats for the next few months and enjoy the sunshine. Like Roy Ayers said “Everybody loves the sunshine” and there’s no better way to take advantage of the weather than with a great fun filled festival. There are plenty of fairs, festivals and fetes around South London this summer that you will definitely enjoy.
