Here it is, another article in our series on the blue plaques of South London, and this week we're talking about the blue plaques of Deptford and New Cross. From the outset we're going to be very honest with you and tell you that there is only one 'official' blue plaque in Deptford and New Cross. Talking about only one plaque would not be particularly interesting however, so we're included the Lewisham maroon plaques as well in this list, along with one or two other plaques. Some might accuse this list of being somewhat arbitrary as we haven't included every plaque in the area, but we've included those which we thought were worth including. Though there is only one blue plaque, we've called this article the 'Blue Plaques of Deptford and New Cross' for the sake of consistency. Anyhow, we hop you enjoy this list of the blue plaques of Deptford and New Cross.
South London is an incredibly diverse region, and is home to numerous different ethnicities that all contribute something different to the areas that they call home. There a number of different avenues through which different groups access each others cultures, and are able to some extent experience them. These include mediums like visual art and music, however, we're not here to talk about them, though they are worthy of discussion, no, we're going to be talk about a more overtly sensational medium - food. Though you can taste similarities between different cuisines, each and all have something about them that sets them apart - be it a reliance on particular ingredients native to the country, or a signature popular dish. There are even some cuisines that have become so established here that the cuisine served on these shores has mutated, for want of a better word, and there are dishes served that were developed in the UK - see chicken tikka masala. So here is a list of 25 different cuisines that you can try in South London.
Ah the silver screen! Romance, drama, comedy, horror, sci-fi - we've all got different tastes. Some of us like watching movies at home, curled up on the sofa with loved ones, or on our own, becoming absorbed in a world away from ourselves, that's cool, we understand. A lot of us though, we love going to the cinema, to see films in a special setting, and to make an evening of it. What do independent cinemas have over, say, your Odeons? Let's just tell it straight - character. These places are unique on the inside and out, and if you're going on a date, then surely it's better to go somewhere a little different, rather than the flat-pack, business park cinemas littered all over the country. Anyway, we thought it would be nice to compile a list of the 10 independent cinemas in South London. Before you moan at us for not including Picturehouse, they're owned by Cineworld and have been since 2012, so they're no longer independent in our eyes.
New Cross, much like a lot of South London, has a growing gastronomic reputation. With a wide variety of cuisines that reflect the varied community, it has become a fantastic place for a sit-down meal at all times of the day. Whether you fancy something light for lunch, or a place for a romantic meal later in the evening, there’s plenty of options in the New Cross area. To keep you as informed as possible, we’ve compiled a list of, what we think – and we should stress that this is just our opinion – are the 7 best meals in New Cross.
For an outsider the first impression of New Cross might not be bedazzling, but the area is actually very charming. This lively part of town is home to Goldsmiths College, casual hipsterism and fascinating places like Prangsta Costumiers and Venue. New Cross has a big art and music scene, which naturally goes hand in hand with having a few pints every once in a while, luckily, New Cross is also an area full of lovely pubs and bars which cater to all the different groups that inhabit New Cross – students, locals, families etc. Being kind, generous people at South London Club, we thought it only right to give a list of 5 places to go for a drink in New Cross.
