Greenwich and Blackheath are two of London’s greenest and most picturesque neighbourhoods - attributes that lend themselves spectacularly to idyllic romantic outings. Whether you’re looking for a cosy alcove away from the hustle and bustle of the city, or some fine alfresco dining on a sunny afternoon, this verdant and flourishing part of South London is worth taking some time to explore.
The smallest details, such as candles, soft colours and dimmed lights make a romantic meal all the more special and enchanting. Restaurants all over the world use particular lighting methods to showcase food whilst simultaneously creating a emotive ambience for their customers. With these details in mind, we have compiled a list of the finest independent restaurants that boast some of these subtle-but-crucial features that combine to produce the ideal romantic meal.
Davy's Wine Vaults, Greenwich: Best for Wining & Dining
Davy’s Wine Vaults offers a classic option for a romantic meal, decorated with vintage pieces in its 19th Century building, it has a distinct feel. In the summer, you can also watch the world go by in their outdoor seating area. Enjoy a glass or two of wine with your date from their excellent and extensive wine menu. The food menu is equally as expansive and features British classics including fish and chips, and sausages and mash. It also has a range of lighter meals including sandwiches, cheese boards and salads. Even more appetising is the prospect of 10% off the food menu when you show your South London Club Card.
Pizza Luciano, Blackheath: Best for Take-away Romance
Luciano’s Pizza place, while only a tiny take-away oriented outlet, is definitely up there for top romantic meals in the area. Located down the hill from Blackheath Village (on the way to Lee), this local independent has become a renowned favourite for its succulent and flavoursome freshly made pasta and authentic stone baked pizzas. The menu offers a classic selection of cured meats, and there is also an option of sharing platters including the appealing Gran Misto Mare Luciano - made up of a variety of fresh seafood. The sizeable selection of Italian wines, freshly made desserts, fairy lights, outdoor dining and intimate atmosphere all contribute to the romantic ambience. Prices are standard for London, but the portions are substantial and the selection of Italian liquors make for a truly toasty experience. The craftsmanship of the chefs and an impressive pizza oven are both on full display, again adding to the intimacy. Another perk is that Luciano’s is the only place in the area where you can order pizza to take-away whilst enjoying a glass of fine wine with your date - a saving grace for those who forgot to book a table…

The Village Deli, Blackheath Village: Best for a Lunch Date
Some of the most romantic meals are often had in the morning; perhaps you share some pancakes & fresh fruit before your partner jumps onto a train that disappears into the morning mist on it’s way into the city… Just us? Ok, well if you’re looking for a quiet bite to eat, or for somewhere to settle down for a light romantic lunch, then look no further than The Village Deli - the perfect setting for an authentic delicatessen experience.
There is something quite organic about the atmosphere here as you find yourself catching only the pitter-patter of others in the background. Vegan Garden, Greenwich Market: Best for 'Romance On The Go'
Instead of sitting in a restaurant, enjoy a romantic stroll by the river, around Greenwich Market or through the naval college. Pick up lunch from Greenwich Market and set up a picnic either on the grass in the naval college if it’s warm, or if not wrap up and sit on one of the benches lining the Thames.
Just to let you known that I'm not trading at #Greenwichmarket tomorrow, instead I'll be there on Friday to support the Mcmillan fund raising event. Do join me for some #veganlunch, a slice of #vegancakes or a chat perhaps... Otherwise I'll see you over the weekend at Greenwich market from 11am til 5pm Xx
The Green Cafe, Greenwich: Best for a Breakfast Date
Who says breakfast can't be romantic? Sitting face to face, crunching though nutritious toast with an eye-opening coffee steaming up your glasses... With their discernible selection of tasty morsels, The Green Cafe ensure you'll be breaking your fast in style. Expect eggs of all kinds, a formidable full english (for those who don't let romance get in the way of a good meal) and smoothies of all colours and flavours. Oh, and don't forget to flash your South London Club Card!
Green Pea, Greenwich: Best for a 'Home Cooked' Feel
Owned and managed by the charismatic, worldly and eccentric restauranteur, Tom; this cosy little-known restaurant was for a long time, according to Tripadvisor, rated the best restaurant (out of 20,000 others) in London. It's true, we Googled it. While the interior feels like you've stepped back into your Grandmother's living room circa. 1995, the hospitality and simple-yet-spectacular menu outshine any discrepancy in the decor.
Green pea🌱in #greenwich does the best homemade Irish #pies 🍴and a very reasonably priced roast at the weekend! Book in advance - it gets pretty busy and Tom is hilarious! Champagne and Fromage, Greenwich: Best for a Special Occasion
What’s more romantic than having a glass of artisanal champagne and sharing a baked camembert? There isn’t an overwhelming selection of food, but there is a respectable range of cheese and charcuterie boards, as well as a choice of deserts. One to enjoy for a special occasion.
Locale, Blackheath Village: Best for Cocktails
Ideal for cosy couples, Locale radiates romance from all corners of its spacious and glamorous restaurant and bar area. It is located on a side street in the village (like most hidden gems) and is a stylish cornerstone of the Blackheath food scene. The mix of dimmed lights, beautiful live music and mock balconies that overlook the cosy streets of the village add to the superb quasi-Parisian ambience so ingrained in classic notions of conventional romantic settings. Locale is not a cheap date, so be prepared to splash some cash on their sizeable selection of seafood sharers, delicious prime cut steaks and 5 Star Martinis.
Royal Teas, Greenwich: Best for Coffee and Cake
Royal Teas is set on a beautifully quiet road just off Greenwich town centre, on the way to Point Hill. It offers a delicious veggie menu, with everything from wraps and salads to steaming jacket potatoes. They also do excellent American-style breakfasts with a large range of coffee and teas, with an even more impressive array of cakes.
The Scullery, Blackheath Standard: Best for Seasonal Food
Tucked away next to the pub at Blackheath Standard, The Scullery has been quietly providing for the gastronomic desires of local residents for quite some time. With a commitment to sourcing ingredients locally, seasonally and sustainably, The Scullery earns it’s place as one of Blackheath’s most romantic food destinations. Not just because the the food always reflects the current season, thus adding to the ambience, but because it is a well-situated stop after a romantic walk across the heath. Think warm, rich dishes in Winter and refreshing light lunches in Summer. Nothing says compassion and caring more than taking your date to restaurant where environmental impacts and social welfare are at the heart of what they do.
And so concludes our selection of the best places for a romantic meal in Greenwich and Blackheath! Now, all dates are different and what is romantic is subjective, but whichever you choose, do so in the knowledge that you're supporting independent businesses and the jobs, local tax revenue and investment in the community that goes with it.
