Lewisham and Croydon natives rejoice! London’s Borough of Culture is making it’s mark in the south as Lewisham and Croydon are next to win the title! Lewisham will hold the title in 2021, with Croydon following suit in 2023, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced.
In Lewisham’s corner, we have their bid titled Cultural Activism, which will advocate important issues such as climate change and diversity. With this title attached to the area, events set to take place next year include an artist-led tribute to the Rock Against Racism movement and a climate change carnival! Rock Against Racism was a movement launched in 1976 and spreads the message of anti-racism through the power of rock music, having organised over 500 gigs and 13 carnivals in just it’s first six years! It featured prominent rock bands of the time, including The Clash, and protested the rise of the far right in the 1970s.

Lewisham and Croydon have set out bold and exciting plans that will use culture to deliver real change in their boroughs, and I’m already looking forward to seeing their plans come to life.”
2022 has been declared a ‘fallow year’, until Croydon will hold the title of London Borough of Culture in 2023. For Croydon, the theme will be Sustainability, with exciting events like a reuse and recycle fashion show and a music festival! Both boroughs will be awarded £1.35m to fund their year-long programme of activities.

This title of London Borough of Culture started back in 2018, with Waltham Forest being the first and held more than 1000 events in its reigning year. It’s successor was the borough of Brent in 2019.
