Bakerloo Line Extension

Transport for London (Tfl) have recently announced their exciting plans for extending the Bakerloo Line! This extension could be a fantastic addtion to the Bakerloo line and provide more variety to travelling to Lewisham. Be sure to come back after you’ve read this blog and complete the survey to have your say!

Currently, the Bakerloo Line terminates at Elephant and Castle on the southbound route, but Tfl have plans to include stops at Old Kent Road, where two new stations could pop up, as well as New Cross Gate and Lewisham. If this is successful, they may even be potential to extend it further!

This is great news for Lewisham locals in particular, since at the moment the Lewisham station only lies on the DLR. With Lewisham station potentially making an appearance on the Bakerloo line, this could mean a faster and more straightforward route into central London. More speficially, it means the new Bakerloo line would tunnel to the current Hayes National Rail line between Lewisham and Ladywell at Wearside Road Council depot.

Other fantastic benefits of this extension include a train every 3-4 minutes direct to central London, journey times being cut by up to 14 minutes and space for up to 27,000 more people every morning peak!

The next step in these plans would be to extend beyond Lewisham along the Hayes National Rail line, with trains every 3-4 minutes calling at Ladywell, Catford, Lower Sydenham and all stations beyond to Hayes and Beckenham Junction.

As well as improving the routes, Tfl hopes to make improvements to the stations themselves, including building a new station at New Cross Gate to improve its connections to National Rail and Overground and improve the intercange station at Lewisham that links National Rail, DLR and buses.

If this sounds like a project you want to support, then Tfl are working with Lewisham Council to get locals to speak up and put their voices behind this exciting project. Don’t forget to complete the survey by Sunday 22nd December and note that Q. 9 relates specifically to the proposed extension along the existing Hayes line, with all other eight questions being optional. With the help of your voices, this project can be expected to be confirmed by late next year!
