8 Great Greengrocers In South London

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. And whilst that might not be completely true, the mentality is. Healthy eating is essential when it comes to living long healthy lives, and with the added bonus of buying locally, you get to give back to the community and help the environment, all the while enjoying delicious food from these 8 great greengrocers in South London.

Good Food

7 Sandhurst Market, Sandhurst Road, Catford, London, SE6 1DL

Good Food is a health food deli & community food hub situated on Sandhurst Road, Catford. Good Food was made possible by a successful crowdfunding campaign and has since established itself as a source of local, organic and feel-good produce. In addition to the local produce offering, the business is legally structured as a social enterprise meaning the shop and deli are on a mission to provide value for society, rather than for the business's shareholders.

"We want to do our bit to make the food industry more fair and sustainable and make local food affordable and accessible to everyone."

With big ambitions and an evident appetite for revolutionising the way we eat, Good Food and the fantastic team behind it truly are an asset to the local community. With plans to support local food banks and to offer work experience and apprenticeships to young people, the ‘Good’ will no doubt be felt even if you haven't eaten any of the Food.

With an aim to provide the highest quality produce at everyday prices, Good Food is spearheading a reconnaissance mission for our once-thriving high streets and hope those like-minded entrepreneurs will follow suit and set up a network of similar shops across South London and we wish them all the best!

Local Greens

Bath Factory Estate, Arch 1169, London SE24 9AJ

Local Greens was founded in 2011 in Herne Hill, South London, by eco-conscious mums who wanted to provide fresher, fairer and more local food for their families and neighbourhoods.

Local green off a selection of bags that include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that are sent to your door at different time schedules depending on the bag. These bags include The Veggie ++ (Purple), The Standard (Blue), Fruit (Brown) and more. Check their Instagram to see what comes in each bag and visit their website or shop to purchase.

All of their suppliers are either certified organic, organic-in-conversion or spray-free farms. The work of these small-scale farms tends to be more labour intensive (compared to conventional growing) and provides employment for people in rural areas, as well as contributes directly to the economic and social well being of those communities.

Knock Knock by Smith and Brock

Arches 254, 255 Grosvenor Terrace, London

Knock Knock by Smith and Brock is an independent Green Grocers in Camberwell, South London.

Knock Knock by Smith & Brock, offer premium grocery boxes delivered to homes in London. Their boxes are different because they include many rare varieties of fruit and veg, as well as artisanal products that never make it to supermarkets!

Knock Knock have a very different supplier base to the big boys & girls of the online grocery industry. They focus on sourcing the best produce directly from smaller, artisanal producers, and growers, who offer the highest quality seasonal products.

Offering expertly select products which are grown for flavour, not commercial yield. Because of that, their volumes are simply too small for the supermarkets to be able to work with those growers and producers. Their team search high and low for the best of the best, and this is how they find exceptional fruit and veg growers, small farms, artisanal bakers and other producers.

What Knock Knock wants is to give people access to an amazing variety of fruit & veg that they won’t usually find in supermarkets.

With their boxes, you get to taste wild garlic, pink radicchio or flower courgette to name a few. The boxes are really special and using these products at home is a total gustatory blast! They love to support all of the boxes with a letter that explains where every product came from and also share recipes that Michelin Star Chefs would create for Knock Knock.

Inn

74 Arodene Road, London, SW2 2BH

Inn is an independent Homeware business in Herne Hill, South London.

We’d all like to reduce the amount of single-use plastic and packaging waste in our shopping, but finding ways to do it that aren’t costly, complicated or time-consuming can be difficult.

At Inn, they solve that problem. Inn is an online zero-waste shopping and refills service. Offering great quality products at affordable prices with the convenience of an online supermarket, but without the single-use plastic.

With inn, you can shop responsibly sourced groceries and eco-friendly cleaning products, and have them delivered to your door in sustainable, reusable packaging. When you’re running low, they will deliver refills and pick up your empty packaging, clean it and reuse it. Our closed-loop service means no packaging ends up in the landfill or the oceans, so you can feel good about your shopping and the environment.

Inn is the idea of Luke and Nick. We were frustrated with the amount of waste we produced on a day-to-day basis and wanted to make the benefit of a zero-waste store accessible to all. So we thought to ourselves: If not now, when?

Inn also serves the following areas : Balham, Battersea, Brixton, Camberwell, Clapham, Dulwich, Elephant and Castle, Earlsfield, Kennington, Oval, Vauxhall, Nunhead, Peckham, Wandsworth.

Puntarelle & Co

5 Voyager Estate South, Spa Road, SE16 4RP, London - Friday + Saturday 9am - 2pm

Since Spring 2014, at their railway arch in Bermondsey, Puntarelle & Co. have been serving food lovers from across London. Prior to this, Elena worked from 2003 at Borough Market, and later in Druid Street, Bermondsey, with the legendary Tony Booth, who for decades supplied many of London’s top chefs including Jeremy Lee, Jamie Oliver, Mark Hix, Gordon Ramsey and many others. Andrei also spent 3 years with Tony Booth fulfilling orders for the most demanding of London’s chefs. Our knowledge of the fruit and veg business is extensive and hands-on.

Their focus is on sourcing specialist produce, primarily from England, Italy and France. As they are a small company, they can work with smaller growers and producers. To date, they have established particularly good links in both the UK and in Italy from where we source beautiful Sicilian citrus. This means better quality produce, grown naturally with minimal use of pesticides or chemicals. It gives them the opportunity to offer our customers amazing fresh produce full of flavour at realistic prices.

Puntarelle & Co. care about fruit and vegetables and how they are produced. They are committed not only to sourcing the best, seasonal produce but also to ensuring that they think and act ethically and sustainably in all that they do. At every point along the way, from working directly with growers wherever possible, to transporting, and supplying their customers, they continually look to improve.  They operate a minimum waste policy, which is supported by their ingredient-led wholesale customers.  This helps them to not order more than we need.  Anything that is left from their Saturday retail is turned into Preserves and Ferments or given to schools and charities.

Charlie and Milda, who are fellow SE4 residents created My Eco Brockley together to offer the area a more sustainable and ethical option for locals to shop in, but for the girls, it was also, equally as important to work with likeminded independent South London businesses to further support all things green.

If you pop to the shop you're likely to find Milda and Charlie with their dogs Fuggle and Yuka. Fuggle is especially happy to greet everyone at the door for a head pat and potentially a belly rub.
