7 Uplifting Places to Walk Through in Wandsworth Borough

Times are tough and there’s a lot of uncertainty, but one thing we can rely on to stay the same and thrive is nature! When you’re feeling low, getting outside in the fresh air can help you reset and clear your mind of your stresses and worries. Here’s 7 uplifting places to walk through in Wandsworth borough!

Clapham Common

Clapham Common is a landmark of both Wandsworth borough and Lambeth borough, with three ponds, a bandstand and plenty of open green space. At 220 acres, this is a great spot to walk or run through to add some green to your daily exercise or help your dog let off some steam. Stunning flowers are still blooming around the common, perfect to either snap a quick picture of or even get some inspiration for your home garden. If you’re looking for a longer route, take a tour of all the bandstands in South London and visit Southwark Park and Peckham Rye too!

Tooting Bec Common

Tooting Common is another stunning green space, being recognised as a Site of Metropolitan importance for Greater London, due to the number of rare wildlife and trees in the common. The common itself dates back to the Medieval era, with wide sweeps of green, perfect for those feeling trapped in their homes. There are also several secluded spots amongst thick wild flowers if you want some alone time to feel completely immersed in thriving nature. Turn your walk into a nature watch and look out for the likes of mute swans, Egyptian geese, dragonflies and mallard ducks!

Battersea Park

Battersea Park is definitely one of our favourites, with landmarks just as The Peace Pagoda, the bandstand and The Three Standing Figures statue by Henry Moore. This 200 acre park opened back in 1858; acting as a constant for us in these ever-changing times, it can feel grounding visiting a green space like this one. If you want to know more about The Peace Pagoda and its spiritual movement, check out our blog here. The park also provides beautiful views of the Thames too!

Wimbledon Common

This open space in Wimbledon is another fantastic nature escape. Whether you’re looking for green fields to let your dogs and children run free, or a dense woodland to get lost in, Wimbledon Common has you covered during your lockdown exercise. The staff at Wimbledon Common are also working hard to keep the park open and make it a safe place during quarantine, patrolling the area to make sure locals are adhering to social distancing measures. This common is a quaint pocket of countryside in the heart of Wimbledon where you can find peace.

Wandsworth Common

Wandsworth Common is another stunning park, with several ponds and a lake to circulate during your walk through this green space. On the slightly smaller side, this park is great for locals looking for a shorter walking route to capture a piece of nature for the day. You may also spot some blue plaques in and around the common, including Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor (1929-1992), a previous Prime Minister who lived in Wandsworth. As many locals know, you can find the famed Wandsworth Common Windmill here too.

Found along the south bank of the River Thames, Wandsworth Park is a hidden gem in our eyes, with stunning greenery and home to over 350 trees to explore. The avenue of trees shown in the picture below provide a scenic and almost dream-like backdrop to your walk. This park can easily help you get lost in the magic of nature and leave the outside world and its troubles behind, even if only for an hour.

King George’s Park

Officially opened by King George V back in 1923, King George’s Park is a charming green space where you can watch the calming flow of the River Wandle. The park also features formal and ornamental gardens to admire, including a heather and rose garden, as well as a rockery. It is one of the many wildlife hubs in Wandsworth borough, with many native trees and small mammals to spot during your walk through this park.
