Peckham Platform - Creative & Educational Charity In Peckham
Peckham Platform is a creative and educational charity based on Peckham Square, South London. Peckham Platform became independent at the start of 2014 and was awarded Arts Council national portfolio funding six months later. As an organisation, they believe that communities can inform and shape their engagement with their locality by working with contemporary visual artists. Their programme of commissions creates meaningful and accessible social arts practice for Peckham and beyond, providing an expansive platform for different voices and debate, bringing contemporary social practice alive.
They do this by supporting artists and communities to co-create and own new artworks. This involves working with both the best social arts practitioners who prioritise working with people, and working with communities, to identify issues that are important to them and can be addressed through contemporary art. Typically the art on show is produced locally and sold by the artists themselves - facilitating the transfer of art between the artist and local people.
The Peckam Platform impacts the community in many ways; it helps increase civic pride and build a positive sense of place; it educates children and young people in the importance of art and the right way to express culture, opinion and beliefs. Importantly, it also acts as a model for other communities to develop social arts practices, allowing more people to enjoy positive cultural spaces in their areas. Truly inspiring charity with a positive cultural impact, be sure to visit the gallery, view the amazing artwork and engage with neighbours and members of the community.
